Lundr

Lundr is an animistic monarchy located in the south-west of Deoria. The nation is snowy cold all year around, which provides individual challenges for its people.

The region is known for its quality wood and leatherworkers, along with some unique delicacies that can only be obtained in the local climate.

The main population of this Lundr are orcs and hobgoblins. The local language is giant.

Society

Faith

The state religion of Lundr is based on the core belief that everything from plants, animals to people are filled with spiritual energy. This soul outlives the physical form, but can often take form in new ways, such as nature spirits or even monsters. Sacrifices to the spirits are made and shamans tasked to intepret their will in an effort to appease them.

Most people have small shrines in their home, as well as each settlement has a larger one used for ceremonies and sacrifies. These sacrifices can be anything from food or money, animals or in rare cases even people.

Administration and Social Classes

The sovereign of Lundr is the king, whos title is passed on hereditarily. Should no heir be found, the oldest Jarl will inherit the title. Jarls are noble chieftains set to rule over territories in the kings stead.

The social hierarchy in Lundr can be split into multiple classes.

The highest standing are the Jarls, who govern large areas as local rulers. While Jarls are subject to the king, they are relatively free in how they act out their rule, as long as national law is not violated.

The Karls, who are non-ruling nobles and landowners are subject to their local Jarl. They pay taxes to the Jarl and often own land in the Jarls jurisdiction. About one sixth of the population are part of this class.

The free peasents are all those citizens that do not own land and make up about half of the population. They are often artisans and craftsmen, living in the larger settlements.

The remaining third of the population are thralls, who are servants and workers in the farms and larger households of the Karls and Jarls, and they are used for constructing fortifications, ramps, canals, mounds, roads and similar hard work projects. New thralls were supplied by either the sons and daughters of thralls or by sentencing convicted criminals to thralldom. Thralls are usually looked down upon, even despised by some.

History

The beginning of Lundr was that of escapees from the darkling attacks in the north. Fleeing into the unclaimed and inhospitable south, where no society had yet formed. Due to that, the early years of what would once be Lundr were filled with infighting and pillaging. Split into many so called warborn clans, the people of the snow region fought themselves over food, territory and domninance.

After almost two centuries of these clan wars, one fearless warrior grew tired of fellow warborn spilling each others blood. with a combination of force, guile and determination, the man by the name of Ulfbjarn made the unification of the warborn clans his lifes work. This would see him proclaimed the first king of the new, united nation of Lundr. His bloodline still holds the throne, as the society of warborn has blossomed and grown.

Military

The military of Lundr is quite large, as every man and woman of age learns how to fight. It is necessary, both for cultural reasons, as well as to defend oneself from the dangers of this land.

The warborn are a combination of infantry clad in mail, equipped with large shields and various arms, as well as skilled archers. An exeption are the Huscarls, the kings guard, who are heavily armored elite warriors, bearing shield splitting axes.

Foreign Relations

Lundr stands mostly by itself, however upholds active trade with Aknar, Galardanad and Ithilien.
